The Cost of Waiting

What a monthly amount could build if you start today, against starting in a few years.

How to use this tool
  1. Enter what you could invest each month, a one-time amount, or both.
  2. Enter your age and the age you would keep going until.
  3. Compare starting today with waiting 1, 3 or 5 years, and see what catching up would take.
a month

Small is fine. The point is the starting, not the amount.

Optional. Savings sitting idle, a bonus, a gratuity or an inheritance.

10%

What a well-allocated portfolio is usually planned around over the long run. Where you sit in this range depends on your risk profile.

Nothing you enter here is saved or stored. This is just for you to explore.

Start today with ₹5,000 a month, and by age 60 it could become

₹1.71 Cr

You would put in ₹21 L yourself over 35 years. The rest is growth, if it grows at 10% a year.

Prices will have risen by then too: at 6% a year, ₹1.71 Cr at 60 would buy about what ₹22.29 L buys today.

Raise the monthly amount 10% each year as your pay grows, and it could become about ₹5.65 Cr (₹73.53 L in today’s money).

How these figures are worked out

Starting today. ₹5,000 a month from 25 to 60: 420 months, each month’s money going in at the start of the month, growing at 10% a year.

10% a year works out to about 0.797% a month: growing by that every month for 12 months makes 10% in a year.

  • Month 1: ₹5,000 goes in, and grows to ₹5,040 by the month’s end.
  • Month 2: another ₹5,000 goes in, making ₹10,040, which grows to ₹10,120.
  • And so on, every month. The table shows where it stands at the end of each year.

In year 1, ₹60,000 went in but grew only about ₹3,203. Each month’s money is invested for just part of the year (the first month’s for 12 months, the last month’s for 1). From year 2, the whole amount grows all year, so growth speeds up.

Raised each year. The same, with the monthly amount raised 10% at the start of every year after the first (₹5,000 a month in year 1, ₹5,500 in year 2, and so on): about ₹5,65,13,845 by 60.

Starting later. The same, for fewer months: starting in 1 year, 408 months make about ₹1,55,14,786; starting in 3 years, 384 months make about ₹1,27,12,447; starting in 5 years, 360 months make about ₹1,03,96,464.

Catching up. The monthly amount that, over those fewer months, could still reach about ₹1,71,29,467: ₹5,520 after a wait of 1 year (rounded up, ₹5,600); ₹6,737 after a wait of 3 years (rounded up, ₹6,800); ₹8,238 after a wait of 5 years (rounded up, ₹8,300).

In today’s money. Prices rising 6% a year for 35 years multiply by 1.06 × 1.06 × … (35 times) = 7.6861. So ₹1,71,29,467 ÷ 7.6861 = about ₹22,28,633.

Worked out in full and shown rounded (the multipliers to four decimal places, money to the rupee), so a sum done by hand can differ slightly. An illustration to help you think, not a promise.

What waiting costs

The same ₹5,000 a month, started later, by age 60:

  • Start today₹1.71 Cr
  • Start in 1 year₹1.55 Cr

That could be about ₹16.15 L less. To catch up you would need about ₹5,600 a month instead.

  • Start in 3 years₹1.27 Cr

That could be about ₹44.17 L less. To catch up you would need about ₹6,800 a month instead.

  • Start in 5 years₹1.04 Cr

That could be about ₹67.33 L less. To catch up you would need about ₹8,300 a month instead.

Waiting 5 years means putting in ₹3 L less yourself, but you could end up with about ₹67.33 L less. The early years do the most work, because they have the longest to grow.
