To pay for the car comfortably, put aside about

₹23,000 a month

The car costs ₹8 L today. With prices rising 6% a year, it is likely to cost about ₹9.53 L in 3 years. Growing at 10% a year, that could build about ₹9.62 L: about ₹8.28 L of it your own money, and the rest growth.

How ₹23,000 a month could build ₹9.62 L

  1. The price by then. With prices rising 6% a year for 3 years, a price multiplies by 1.06 × 1.06 × 1.06 = 1.191. So ₹8,00,000 × 1.191 = about ₹9,52,813.
  2. The monthly amount. Growing at 10% a year, ₹22,773 a month could reach about that. It is rounded up to ₹23,000, so at that return it shouldn’t fall short.
  3. How it grows. Each month’s money goes in at the start of the month and grows until the end of it.

10% a year works out to about 0.797% a month: growing by that every month for 12 months makes 10% in a year.

  • Month 1: ₹23,000 goes in, and grows to ₹23,183 by the month’s end.
  • Month 2: another ₹23,000 goes in, making ₹46,183, which grows to ₹46,552.
  • And so on, every month. The table shows where it stands at the end of each year.

2₹5,52,000₹6,10,538
3₹8,28,000₹9,62,324

In year 1, ₹2,76,000 went in but grew only about ₹14,732. Each month’s money is invested for just part of the year (the first month’s for 12 months, the last month’s for 1). From year 2, the whole amount grows all year, so growth speeds up.

Of the ₹9,62,324 at the end, ₹8,28,000 is your own money, and ₹1,34,324 is growth.

₹8 L could now be ₹12.88 L

₹8 L invested 5 years ago could be worth about ₹12.88 L today, at 10% a year: about ₹4.88 L more than you put in.

How ₹8 L could have become ₹12.88 L

  1. ₹8,00,000 invested once, 5 years ago, growing at 10% a year: each year it is worth 1.1 times what it was the year before.
  2. Over 5 years that multiplies it by 1.1 × 1.1 × … (5 times) = 1.6105. So ₹8,00,000 × 1.6105 = about ₹12,88,408.
