Kids' Goal Calculator

What school, college or a wedding could cost by the time your child is ready.

How to use this tool
  1. Pick the goal: school, college, a wedding or your own. “Starter fund” shows what a small amount could grow to.
  2. Enter your child’s age, the age it’s needed and what it costs today.
  3. Add any savings already set aside for it.
  4. Move “Start with what you can” to see how much of the cost your own amount could cover.

Your best estimate is fine.

Optional. Savings set aside for it, invested from now.

In today’s money, this costs

₹20 L

Adjusted for rising costs by the time they’re ready

₹51.21 L

In 13 years, with costs rising 7.5% a year. That is about 2.6 times what it costs today.

How these figures are worked out

The cost by then. With costs rising 7.5% a year for 13 years, a cost multiplies by 1.075 × 1.075 × … (13 times) = 2.5604. So ₹20,00,000 × 2.5604 = about ₹51,20,826.

The monthly amount. Growing at 10% a year, ₹16,520 a month could reach about that; it is rounded up to ₹17,000. Started smaller and raised 10% every year, ₹9,929 a month in the first year could reach it; rounded up, ₹10,000.

10% a year works out to about 0.797% a month: growing by that every month for 12 months makes 10% in a year.

  • Month 1: ₹17,000 goes in, and grows to ₹17,136 by the month’s end.
  • Month 2: another ₹17,000 goes in, making ₹34,136, which grows to ₹34,408.
  • And so on, every month. The table shows where it stands at the end of each year.
₹17,000 a month, at 10% a year

12₹24,48,000₹45,95,250
13₹26,52,000₹52,69,664

In year 1, ₹2,04,000 went in but grew only about ₹10,889. Each month’s money is invested for just part of the year (the first month’s for 12 months, the last month’s for 1). From year 2, the whole amount grows all year, so growth speeds up.

That builds about ₹52,69,664, a little more than the ₹51,20,826 needed, because the monthly amount was rounded up.

Worked out in full and shown rounded (the multipliers to four decimal places, money to the rupee), so a sum done by hand can differ slightly. An illustration to help you think, not a promise.

Three ways to get there

  • The same amount every month

    ₹17,000 a month

  • Start smaller, and raise it 10% every year

    ₹10,000 a month

That is the first year. Raised 10% each year, it reaches about ₹31,500 a month in the last year.

  • That could cover about 18% of the cost, or about 30% if you raise it 10% every year.

That leaves about ₹41.91 L to arrange another way, or about ₹12.14 L put in once today, alongside it.

The ₹9.3 L it builds could pay for about 6% of college abroad or about 22% of a wedding, by then.

Ballparks at 10% a year, not the final answer. Whatever you cover now is that much less to find, or to borrow, when the day comes.

These are general illustrations to help you think, not advice for your situation and not a promise. Mutual Fund investments are subject to market risks, read all scheme related documents carefully.
